The most important influence on the early spirit and accomplishments of Rosecrans athletics was its first coach, Dick Mattingly.  He graduated from St. Thomas High School and Muskingum College where he excelled in football, baseball and track.

He coached at Rosecrans from 1952 through 1956 when he left for Toledo's St. Francis de Sales High School. Even while at St. Francis, Dick returned to Zanesville to attend our 20th, 25th and 35th class reunions.

He was a winning coach. At Rosecrans he achieved a 26-11-1 (.684) football and 79-26-7 (.705) basketball records. While at St. Francis he compiled a 73-32-7 (.651) record as football coach.

Mattingly retired as St. Francis Athletic Director in 1988. He passed away on March 4, 2008 at the age of 84. He is deeply missed by all the people he touched at Rosecrans and St. Francis.
